Best Ryan Adams since Gold:
This album really grows on you. "Magick" is a wonderful anthem for those of us who grew up making out to 33 RPM disc. Being interupted every twenty minutes to change records may have saved a few unwanted pregnancies. The pedal steel on "Born Into A Light" is also balm for the soul. If you like Ryan, Gram, or Willie, buy this record.
Practically Perfect:
I'm not sure what the demographics and qualifications of the consumer reviewers are on this site but I don't hold myself out as any more qualified. I will say, though, that I own almost everything Ryan Adams has released, from Whiskeytown on down. Like many "warm weather" fans, a number of the reviewers here somehow claim some metaphysical expertise in analyzing how "Cardinology" compares against his earlier work. Easy Tiger, Part Deux:
This to me could be Easy Tiger, Part Two...incidentally, East Tiger, along with Cardinology, are the only two Ryan Adams albums I've kept. I've bought a lot of his stuff and, in my humble opinion, most of it is a rambling mess. Cardinology does sound like an attempt at producing a more refined, focused and, gulp, commercial sound. This is not a bad album, it is just boring. There are no bad songs, but only a couple of good ones. I've followed Ryan Adams's career since Whiskeytown and pretty much enjoy everything he puts out. Maybe this one will grow on me, because I really want to like it. It just feels out of place and flat. I won't lose faith in the guy though, since his track record suggests that he will release something new soon.
