Editorial Review:
Get ready to experience an exhilarating journey into one of Manhattan's most vibrant communities, named "BEST MUSICAL OF THE YEAR" by NewYork Magazine and "BEST OF 2007" by The New York Times. With an amazing cast, incredible dancing and a gripping story of hope and self discovery, In The Heights is your ticket into a world where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. Find out what it takes to make a living, what it costs to have a dream, and what it means to be home...In The Heights.
Broadway hasn't been very good at incorporating various strands of pop and rock over the past 40 years. Most of the shows attempting that draw from contemporary chart sounds have felt awkward, rather than "young." It's all the more rewarding, then, that 2008 saw not one but two successful efforts - Passing Strange and In the Heights. The latter, set in New York's predominantly Dominican neighborhood of Washington Heights, is propelled by first-timer Lin-Manuel Miranda's high-energy, horn-and-percussion-driven score. Miranda managed to modernize classic elements found in most Broadway shows by mixing them up with Latin and hip-hop arrangements. "In the Heights" and "The Club" are joyous ensemble numbers, for instance, while "Carnaval del Barrio" is an uplifting eleven o'clock belt, "Sunrise" a romantic duet and "Everything I Know" a sentimental soliloquy. While Miranda himself convincingly plays the lead, this is a true ensemble piece. The CD snaps, crackles and pops with stellar performances (special props to Mandy Gonzalez, Karen Olivo and the funny, brassy Andréa Burns). -- Elisabeth Vincentelli

Excellent Soundtrack:
"In the Heights" is an excellent sountrack of Latino Rhtyhm with the Broadway Musical Style, something we were missing to hear on Broadway. Even if you haven't seen the musical you will love this Soundtrack because the story is just amazing and it is a reflection of current NY society, there is this a mix between Latino and American culture printed all over the Musical filled with Salsa and Merengue.
Totally new sound!:
In the Heights in a fantastic Latin Rap broadway musical. While enjoying the soundtrack, you can appreciate how diverse Lin-Manuel Miranda truly is. At the same time, you start to desire more and more albums from the same genre. This groundbreaking new musical is cool for teens, yet classy enough for grandparents (almost). Especially if you speak Spanish, this CD is for you. There are references from DR, PR, and Cuba that you might not understand if you haven't lived there.
"Heights" Aims High...Reaches Higher:
This tantalizingly brisk recording of the Tony award winning musical is both a hybrid and an amalgamation of two so seemingly disparate musical styles that it would have seemed inconceivable that such an achievement was possible. Purists of either camp, be it latino/rap/hip-hop or traditional musical theater, may squirm at "In the Heights" as an abomination when it is actually doing what inventive commercial music always does: challenges, entices, broadens and ultimately invites a new audience in. While not... more info
