The Panasonic DMR-EZ28K DVD recorder is capable of receiving both digital and analog broadcasts. Even when digital signals drop out because of interference with direct signal access, which makes the picture either disappear or become filled with block noise, the Digital Tuner still produces a beautiful picture. Just slip the SD card into the slot or use the cable to connect the camera to the USB terminal, and you're ready to enjoy a spectacular big-screen slideshow with family and friends. You can even listen to music recorded onto a USB device while viewing your photos. Connect your Panasonic DVD recorder to a flat-panel HDTV via an HDMI cable and the TV channel setting information is automatically downloaded to the recorder. Once the Auto Preset Download is complete, the DVD recorder will keep whichever TV channel you're watching as its receiving channel. This means you can record the program you're watching by just pressing the Record button on the VIERA remote. With VIERALink, you don't have to worry about setting the recorder to the right channel every time you want to record something. Frequently used buttons, such as Power and Open/Close, are located at the top of the main unit (this makes them easier to see when the unit is placed in a rack, where you need to look down when operating it). 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i / 1080p only with ujpconversion through HDMI Output Image File Format - FAT12, FAT16 (SD Memory Card) FAT32 (SDHC Memory Card) SD Image File Format - JPEG conforming DCF Image File Number of Pixels - 34 x 34 to 6,144 x 4096 Inputs and Outputs - 2x LINE (pin jack) Analog Audio (2 Ch) Input, 2x Line (pin jack) Video In, DV Input Terminal, 2x S Connector S-Video In, Built-in SD Card Slot, 1x LINE (pin jack) 2ch Audio Out, Component Video Out (Y, PB, PR), and 1x S Connector S-Video Outputs Dimensions - Height 2-3/8 x Width 16-15/16 x Depth 9-13/16 Weight - 6.16 pounds

great picture:
I bought this model based on other reviews, mostly for the similar Panasonic DVD recorder that did not have a TV tuner built in. That model was sold out everywhere, so I got this one for a bit more, and have no info regarding the television tuner portion. I have had four other set top DVD recorders, and they all were at least in the ballpark picture quality wise, for 1 hour recordings. This machine has a fabulous picture, even on 2 hr. and 4 hr. speed settings. It also has the ability to record a flex... more info
User Unfriendly, not recommended for simple off the air recording:
I needed a DVD Recorder with a built in digital tuner. (My other machine, a Toshiba D-R4, only has an analog tuner.) I chose this unit simply because I had Best Buy store credit that I had to use the day I got it, and this was the only DVD Recorder in the store with a digital tuner at a reasonable price. I use this machine for basic, off-the-air timer recording when I am not home or asleep. And yes, it does the job, and the disks look great. But compared to the Toshiba, it is a major pain to program.... more info
Great DVD Recorder:
If you have basic cable like I do then this unit is just what you need. I have a DMR-ES25 & DMR-EZ27, both by Panasonic and they have worked perfectly since I purchased them from Amazon about 3 years ago! The DMR-EZ27 has the same digital tuner as the EZ28, but no USB port. It grabs hold of the digital channel signal and holds it while recording even when my Samsung Digital TV won't.
Closed Captioning:
On top of the other 5 star reviews for this product, I'd like to add the following: As far as I know based on my research via Google and forums elsewhere, only Panasonic makes the HD Upconverters that can do Closed Captioning over HDMI. Not only that, its predecessor, DMR-EZ27, and this product does closed captioning over component and HDMI. Unfortunately, only the DVD recorders manufactured by Panasonic have this CC feature. I have another HD Upconverter DVD Player, an Insigna NS-UPDVD, and it... more info
