Fast, Fast, Fast. A Workhorse.:
This MFC-74220 is my first multi-function printer, although over the years I've owned 2 Brother laser printers before this one. Brother products are less pricey and I just haven't been able to discern a difference in quality between Brother and other brands that may be percieved as higher quality. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this multi-function is twice as nice as my last Brother printer, which I loved! I couldn't be more impressed with this unit. happier than with HP:
I've had 3 HP all in one's. I've only had this Brother for a month, but I already know I like this much better than any of the HP's. FAST. I love how fast it is. The set up was extremely easy. Thus far, my only complaint is...I print a sheet of labels, maybe once a week. It requires manual feed for this, and if you don't get it 'just right', it may grab the sheet slightly crooked and thus print off a bit.
Seems ok, no OS X 10.5 support:
I haven't had this printer very long but it seems to do a pretty good job over inkjets I've had (ink does not smear). I was disappointed that the bundled MFL-Pro software is not compatible with OS X 10.5 (only 10.4 and earlier).

It has a high initialization time and a slower printing speed. We recently installed a new toner and it still asks us to change something or the other. The printer tends to make a loud sound while printing and sometimes pushing the lower half makes the sound go away. This is definitely not for rugged use. None of us have the time to really keep taking the toner out and... more info
