This is considered the standard lens for use with Canon SLR cameras
Lightweight and affordable, the Canon EF 50mm lens--which offers a fast f/1.8 aperture--is an excellent lens for people who prefer a fixed focal length. Canon's lightest EF lens at a mere 4.6 ounces, the lens boasts a traditional Gauss-type optical design that delivers a sharp performance even when wide open. As a result, the lens provides an image that's extremely close to how your eye perceives a subject, making it excellent for portraits and images that require a natural depth of field. In addition, the lens focuses as close as 18 inches, helping you take extreme close-ups. Finally, the lens offers an excellent color balance. As with all Canon lenses, the lens carries a one-year warranty.

Noisy, loud, but for $85, I'm not going to complain.:
Yes, its noisy, loud, and sometimes slow. But for a f1.8 aperture, for being lightweight, its worth $85 for sure. Great for a beginner photographer like I am to use this to try different shots with a prime lens. As others have noted, construction is plastic, but if I break it, drop it, or whatever, I won't be heartbroken.
Good lens, Great price!!:
I bought this lens because it was highly recommended because of quality. I was not disappointed. It takes good pictures in low light situations and is an awesome portrait lens.
Great Lens for the Price!:
I really have enjoyed this lens. It is lighter than the all metal version. It takes very good pictures. I have always loved to take snap shots and this lens helps to make my pictures come to life and really zoom in on the subjects! I would recommend this lens! Great lens for the price.
A must for any kit:
This lens is a must have for any kit, it is a good lens for the price. If you need a lens to help in low light situations or want a good starter portrait lens, this would be it. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the lens is, for lack of a better word, cheap. Without USM and with a plastic body, it just feels a little less quality, but that's what you get for the price. The low f-stop is nice and gives you a lot more flexibility that you could get without it, just know that if you buy this... more info
